A thousand-page casebook or anatomy atlas is too heavy and too thick for most book stands. Light wire and plastic stands bend or tip, and their small clips can't hold a thick book open, so you end up pinning pages with one hand or bending over a book lying flat on the desk.
The Stander was field-tested with an 11 lb (5 kg) volume at every angle we tried. It has a 5052 aluminum alloy frame, stainless steel joint hardware, an engineered-wood platform and non-slip silicone pads.

Book stands measure height in different ways. Some quote the top edge of the panel; we quote two numbers so you can compare like with like:
Seated, that is enough to bring the page close to eye level. Standing at a standard 30 in desk, it suits users up to about 5′6″ (165 cm); taller users can set it on a counter or raised surface.
It's built for long reading sessions with heavy, thick books, for switching between sitting and standing, and for carrying one stand between home, library and study room.
A simpler stand may be enough if you only read light paperbacks at one fixed height. Be aware, though, that many basic stands don't raise the book at all. They only change its angle, keeping it at desk level or just above, and even raised designs reach 5 to 12 inches at most. Either way, you still end up looking down at the page.
The Stander costs more than a basic stand because it's made for weight, height range and portability. The aluminum frame and stainless steel joints are there so it can hold heavy books steadily, and keep doing so through years of daily use.
Raising reading material closer to eye level can reduce how long you spend looking down. A stand is one part of a comfortable setup, along with chair height, screen position and regular breaks. If you have severe or persistent neck pain, see a doctor or physical therapist.
